King Alfonso X entrusted himself to the Virgin due to a serious illness in her eyes. In his prayers he promised that, if she was cured, he would have a temple built in honor of Saint Anne, which began to be built in the year 1266, in the neighborhood of Triana.
This made neighbors of Triana approach the temple on the eve of July 26 to do the same as the king: ask the Virgin. Although at first these actions had a religious nature, little by little they became popular gatherings in which there began to be dances and songs at the doors of some houses.
La Velá was lived in the temple, in its surroundings, and in the Guadalquivir River, which became the scene where the first activities of this festival took place. La Velá evolved until it became the event that we know today and that this year, 2024, will feature numerous concerts and activities that will fill the streets of Triana with life and joy during the last days of July.
The Velá de Triana will be celebrated between July 20 and 26 around Betis Street, but the days before and after there will also be events to mark the festival. In this year's program there will be concerts, the traditional cucaña, pottery markets, sports competitions and plays.
The Velá de Triana will officially start on July 20, with the concert of the Municipal Symphonic Band of Seville at 10:00 p.m. The welcome speech for these festivities will be given by journalist José Yelamo just after the band's intervention.
The Plaza del Altozano will host concerts at 10:00 p.m. every night starting Sunday, July 21.
- On Sunday, July 21, the group The Miarmers and Joaquín Pavón will perform.
- On Monday, July 22, it will be the turn of Friends of Gines.
- On Tuesday night, the 23rd, Los Alpresa will perform.
- On Wednesday, July 24, there will be a flamenco gala in honor of Manuel Martín.
- On Thursday, the 25th, Joana Jiménez will perform.
- On Friday, July 26 and the last day of the Velá, Álex Ortiz will perform and the awards will be presented.
It is worth highlighting the sports competitions of paddle tennis, women's indoor soccer, men's indoor soccer, simultaneous chess, domino tournament, fishing, 7-a-side soccer tournament and cucaña. The VIII Triana Night Regatta stands out, which is another of the highly anticipated events, which will take place on Wednesday, July 24 at 9:30 p.m.
You can participate in the cucaña on July 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26, starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Guadalquivir dock.
The floral offering at the Cathedral of Triana and the fireworks will take place on July 25 at 00:00, when the bells ring and with this event the closing of the Velá will be celebrated. 'Los gozos' and 'Las nanas' will be played by the band of cornets and drums of the Christ of the Three Falls, and later the Virgin's hand will be kissed.
A few days before, on July 14, the duathlon competition and the Fluvial Procession of the Virgen del Carmen will take place on the Triana bridge, on July 18, at 7:45 p.m.
