The Flamenco Biennial is a project of the Institute of Culture and the Arts (ICAS) of the Seville City Council and has the institutional collaboration of the Ministry of Culture, through the INAEM; the Ministry of Culture of the Junta de Andalucía and the Provincial Council of Seville.
Miquel Barceló has been responsible for creating the poster for this edition that has more than 40 years of history, where the connection between flamenco and history is illustrated by presenting "prehistoric plants in futuristic flowers" and paying tribute to icons such as Camarón, Fernanda and Bernarda, Paco de Lucía, among others.
Before the official opening of this edition, the organization has created the Olematón, an initiative that will travel to different points of the city collecting the cheers of everyone who is encouraged until September 11, which in the words of the director of the Biennial, Luis Ibarra, "It is like a photo booth where we are going to collect all the oles of the city to later make a mix with all of them; a job that Raúl Cantizano will do" with the idea of creating a collective ole and that this collective ole sounds through sensors during the Biennial... that someone is passing by the street, near the Teatro de la Maestranza, for example, and when touching the sensor they say ole to everyone who is there with prestigious participants such as: Ana Morales, Manuel Liñán, Juan de Juan, Mercedes de Córdoba, María Moreno or Paula Comitre and singers such as La Tremendita, Argentina, Rafael de Utrera or Pedro El Granaíno. The itinerary starts on September 11th at the Puente de Triana with the traditional flashmob and the subsequent speech by Sara Baras in the Plaza América, to then go from the Cartuja to the Alcázar and from the Arenal to the Alameda.
At 7:00 p.m. we will enjoy a guitar cycle at the Espacio Turina, in which the premiere of the album by maestro Manolo Franco stands out, the union of Rycardo Moreno and Niño Josele and the talent of Manuel Valencia. The Teatro Central will be the epicentre of the avant-garde dancers with the special collaboration of two National Dance Award winners such as Andrés Marín and Ana Morales who will present the premiere of their Matarife / Paraíso, a reinterpretation of the Divine Comedy from the Andalusian imagination. Après vous, madame, by Paula Comitre, will be one of the highlights of the festival. El Cucharón y paso detrás by the Jerez dancer Joaquín Grilo is a show about bullfighting songs.
For this edition, the Cartuja Auditorium has been incorporated, which will try to become that “Bombonera of singing” with recitals by Rafael de Utrera, Pedro el Granaíno or Esperanza Fernández after the absence of the Lope de Vega Theatre.
The Cartuja Monastery will host the fusion between the Free Verse of the dancer María Moreno and the eclectic singing union of La Tremendita and La Kaíta.
The Real Alcázar will be the palace of the masters of singing. Aurora Vargas, sultana of the gypsy essence, will surely take over the stage of the Patio de la Montería. Through the centuries of singing, it brings together a host of singers from the 70s, the golden age of the flamenco festivals, led by Juan Villar, Calixto Sánchez or Marcelo Sousa.
Two large-scale shows will take place at the Maestranza in Seville: the song to sensuality by the dancer Manuel Liñán in Muerta de Amor; and the latest production of the Ballet Flamenco de Andalucía, Pineda, a Lorca with which Patricia Guerrero debuts as a director.
The Biennial reaches neighborhoods with free concerts in places as diverse as Sevilla Este, the Alameda, Los Bermejales and the Jardines de Murillo. As a novelty, the dancer Leonor Leal has designed a free children's show in two events at CaixaFórum.
