200 international elite athletes will start the Zurich Seville Marathon on February 19 with the aim of breaking the record for the event and achieving the minimum requirements for the World Athletics Championships or the Olympic Games in Paris. With almost 12,000 popular runners, some of the best marathon runners in the world have opted for Seville to achieve their best marks, and incidentally, aspire to improve the records of this event, established by Asrar Abderehman in the men's category and by Alemu Megertu in the category female.
Seville is undoubtedly the flattest marathon in Europe, protected from the wind and with practically no curves. There is no better test to beat the goals that all runners set themselves, nor is there a more beautiful city to run. The arrival in the heart of the city will allow the public to accompany the athletes all the way.
One of the great incentives of the Zurich Seville Marathon for elite athletes will be to meet the minimum requirements required by World Athletics to participate in the World Championships in Budapest to be held in August of this year. In addition, since last November 1 the qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games was open, so in Seville the minimum qualifications for this can also be achieved. The best mark holder among those registered in the male category is Ruben Kiprop Kipyego, who in 2021 signed in Milan in 2h03:55 and that he has been able to run two other times below the test record in Seville (2h04:12 in Valencia in 2021 and 2h04:40 in Abu Dhabi in 2019). The other great contender is Mekuant Ayenew, the winner of the Zurich Seville Marathon in 2020 with a time of 2:04:46, a record that was the record for the event.
Latin America, present in this new edition of the Zurich Marathon of Seville with the presence of up to six record holders from Latin American countries. The fastest marathon runners in the history of Peru (Cristhian Pacheco, 2h09:08), Bolivia (Héctor Garibay Flores (2h09:08), Argentina (Joaquim Emanuel Arbe, 2h09:36), Panama (Jorge Castellblanco, 2h09:49) Paraguay (Derlys Ayala, 2:10:11) and Colombia (Jeison Alexander Suárez, 2:10:51) will run through the streets of the Seville capital. Alemu Megertu crossed the finish line of the Zurich Seville Marathon in 2:18:52.
On Tuesday, January 24, the European and Spanish athletes who will participate in the XXXVIII Zurich Marathon of Seville will be announced.
