Andalusian Flag Day

Andalusian Flag Day

The Government Council held on November 8, 2022 approved the decree that officially declares December 4th as "Andalusian Flag Day". This initiative seeks to promote educational, social and institutional activities to spread the values and meanings embodied by this emblem. The date commemorates the demonstrations of December 4th, 1977, which expressed the will of the Andalusian people to achieve maximum autonomy under the unifying symbol of the Andalusian flag, which has since identified the aspirations and demands of Andalusians as a community.

December 4, 1977 was a historic day for Andalusia: more than two million Andalusians, leaving aside ideological and partisan differences, filled the streets of the eight Andalusian provinces to demand full autonomy. The white and green flag of Andalusia led these demonstrations as a symbol of unity and brotherhood of all Andalusian citizens.

The Museum of Autonomy of Andalusia has organized a "broad and innovative" program of activities to celebrate the third edition of the Day of the Flag of Andalusia, which is commemorated on December 4. The objective is to make known "the history of one of the three symbols of Andalusia along with the coat of arms and the anthem."

According to the announcement made by the Andalusian Studies Centre Foundation (Centra), a special programme will be held from Saturday 30 November to Wednesday 4 December to commemorate this anniversary established by the Andalusian Government.

The Museum of Autonomy – located between Coria del Río and La Puebla del Río, Seville – will open during special hours on Sunday 1 and Monday 2 December, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

The first flag, kept in Room 28F, was made by Angustias García Parias, wife of Blas Infante, with a fabric that the Father of the Andalusian Homeland acquired in Morocco.

This flag remained under the care of his family until 2001, when the Junta de Andalucía acquired the Casa de la Alegría. This emblematic symbol later led the demonstration on December 4, 1977 in Seville.

To delve deeper into the history of this journey, the Andalusian Studies Centre Foundation (Centra), responsible for preserving and disseminating the legacy of Blas Infante, has prepared a documentary exhibition entitled "A Journey and a Flag", available from December 2.

The exhibition, which includes original and unpublished documents, tells the story of the trip that Blas Infante made in 1924 to Agmat, a century ago, to visit the tomb of al-Mutamid, the last king of the Taifa of Seville. During this trip he acquired the fabrics that would be used to make the first flag of Andalusia.

The special programme offers various activities, including educational and recreational initiatives for schoolchildren and the general public, digital applications and an interactive map.
