Holy Week 2025 is here

Processions in Seville on Friday, April 4, 2025. There will be no processions on that day, but the brotherhoods will be preparing for Holy Week. If you are referring to Good Friday (April 18, 2025), there will be important processions on that day, such as: The Brotherhood of the Holy Burial (one of the most solemn) and The Brotherhood of Los Gitanos. The Brotherhood of La Soledad de San Lorenzo, among others.

In Seville, there are more than 60 brotherhoods that carry out their penitential station (procession) during Holy Week. Each one has its own history, devotion, and characteristics. They are divided into:

  • Brotherhoods of Penitence: They process with mystery floats (scenes from the Passion) and floats of Christ or the Virgin.
  • Brotherhoods of Glory: They do not process during Holy Week, but they have worship throughout the year.
  • The brotherhoods are usually made up of Nazarenes (penitents in robes), costaleros (who carry the floats), capataces (who direct the float) and marching bands.

Each brotherhood makes its penitential station from its headquarters (church or chapel) to the Cathedral of Seville, passing through the Carrera Oficial (streets such as Campana, Sierpes and Plaza de San Francisco). Some key moments:

La Madrugá (Night from Thursday to Good Friday): This is the most intense night, with brotherhoods such as: El Silencio (one of the oldest, with a 16th-century Christ). Jesús del Gran Poder (Seville icon). La Macarena (one of the most popular, with its Virgen de la Esperanza). El Calvario (with its moving Cristo del Amor).

These are the most important dates of Holy Week in Seville 2025

  • Palm Sunday: Brotherhoods such as La Borriquita (with children dressed as Hebrews) take part in processions.
  • Holy Monday: La Candelaria and El Beso de Judas stand out. Holy Tuesday: El Cerro del Águila and San Esteban.
  • Holy Wednesday: El Buen Fin and La Lanzada.
  • Holy Thursday: Los Negritos and La Exaltación.
  • Good Friday (daytime): La Carretería and El Sol.
  • Holy Saturday: La Soledad de San Lorenzo (one of the most moving).
  • Easter Sunday: La Resurrection (closes Holy Week).

The floats are one of the most significant parts of Holy Week due to their perfection and the difficulty of passing through narrow streets surrounded by obstacles, but the marching bands make everything possible. Among the main ones, we could say that these are among the best:

Pasos de Misterio: They represent scenes from the Passion (Christ with the Cross, the Last Supper, etc.). Pasos de Palio: They carry the Virgin under an embroidered canopy, accompanied by candles and flowers.

The bands take processional marches, but in silence (like El Silencio).

The saetas (flamenco songs to the floats) are unique moments, especially in neighborhoods like Triana or La Macarena.

Another of the most important points of this tradition are the costaleros, the true soul of the procession. They can carry up to 2 tons on their shoulders.

The wait to see La Macarena can last for hours.

The "smell of incense" and the sound of the drums are hallmarks.
