The National Center of Art and Culture Georges Pompidou of France opened its headquarters in the city of Málaga with the name of Center Pompidou Málaga and located in the space called El Cubo, the work of Daniel Buren, Incubé, where its beautiful colors stand out. In November 2013, it was announced that Malaga would have a headquarters for the Georges Pompidou National Center of Art and Culture and it was agreed that the Center would have a stay of five years, extendable and that the works from the collection of the Parisian Beaubourg would be exhibited in semi-permanent exhibitions. of two and a half years as well as in temporary exhibitions of shorter duration. In February 2018, seeing the public success achieved, the agreement was renewed for five more years, until 2025.
El Cubo is a space located at the confluence of Paseo de La Farola and Paseo de Los Curas, and Pier 1 and Pier 2 of the Port of Malaga with an area of 7,600 m2 and about 6,300 meters are occupied by exhibition areas. with two floors, one at level 0 (access) and the other at level -1. On level 0 are the service and free access areas such as the store, lockers and Youth Public Space and a temporary exhibition hall. On level -1 are the exhibition spaces for the semi-permanent collection as well as the auditorium. The upper floor, the roof of the building, is completely open-plan with a large cube-shaped skylight made of steel and glass, which acts as a visible skylight and gives the complex its name.
Every year, temporary exhibitions created by the curators of the National Museum of Modern Art are presented that aim to cover different areas of the Center Pompidou collection, such as: drawing, photography, video, architecture, design..., and activities open to others. creative disciplines: dance, cinema and conferences that are programmed by the cultural development department.
